Solution

(b) The scores are roughly symmetrically distributed, because most of the data values lie in the middle of the stem and leaf plot.

Sort the data values from smallest to largest:

55, 57, 61, 62, 63, 65, 67, 68, 72, 75, 76, 82, 84, 86, 86, 87, 89, 91, 93, 94

We then note that 75 and 76 are the two middle scores. We then estimate the location of the scores as 75.5, which is the value exactly in the middle between 75 and 76.

(c) We note that the distribution is bimodal (which is unusual), because the distribution contains two peaks (one at stem 6 and one at stem 8).

The reason for the bimodal shape of the distribution could be due to two different tests that were taken by the students, where the students that received one test had much higher scores compared to the students who received the other test.
